Update on the cats rescue mission in Bohemia

First, there is no criminal suspicious activity involved.

Around 2pm, firefighters received calls of ammonia like stench around the property and arrived on the scene. By 3pm, authorities gained access inside the home on Westminster Drive in Bohemia.

After the Suffolk County SPCA arrived and worked on the scene, Roy Gross, chief responded with 28 deceased cats, over 50 alive and more searches are on the way. Another 11 cats were found outside in vulnerable conditions.

Three cats were euthanized since they were extremely sick totalling 31. Police say a couple were living inside the home and the wife passed away while back leaving the husband to take care of the cats. The husband is cooperating with the investigation.

As of now, 61 cats are at the local shelter, Islip Animal Shelter.

As for how the cats ended up in the freezer, police say due to ongoing investigation can’t disclose that.

Once the investigation is complete and the cats are taken care of, they are up for adoption.

Veterinarians and vet techs available to help on Tuesday are urged to contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722 as soon as possible.

Also, the Suffolk SPCA says around $10,000 is needed for veterinary bills to nurse the cats back to health. Anyone interested in helping with the costs can donate directly to the SPCA at this link, https://suffolkspca.org/
