Violations issued to the company that injured multiple people in Bellerose

Today the NYC building issued four construction code violations to the owner of a Hempstead sign company and the business for conducting unlicensed and unpermitted sign work at a storefront on Jericho Turnpike in Bellerose on the Queens side.

From the building dept statement -

The sign, along with a façade wall and awning collapsed at 245-13 Jericho Turnpike on July 23, 2025, injuring one adult and two children. The building commissioner said, “We use permits and approvals as a critical bulwark, protecting communities from unlicensed work and the real danger unchecked construction and structural maintenance can pose. As evidenced by this major collapse, the danger posed by poorly designed and

poorly executed construction is not theoretical. It is immediate, tangible, and capable of creating life threatening hazards for New Yorkers.

The investigation found that the sign had been installed less than two weeks prior to the collapse and did not hold a building dept license to hang signs, did not obtain the required permits to hang the sign, and did not submit the required plans to building dept for review.

If found guilty of these violations, the Hempstead sign company face up to $87,500 in penalties as a result of the violations.

These violations are allegations and subjects of the allegations have the right to contest the violations and present evidence in their defense at a hearing before an Administrative Law

Judge with the City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, who would determine whether the charges should be sustained.
