UPDATE State Police arrest woman in connection with Trenton death

On September 30, 2026, State Police arrested Toni L. Walts, age 38, of Trenton, NY, in connection with the September 17 death of Michael A. Prokopienko, age 31, of Holland Patent.

The arrest follows an extensive investigation by the New York State Police, which included numerous interviews and consultation with the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation determined that on September 17, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m., Walts was handling a loaded double-barrel shotgun at a residence on Jones Road in the town of Trenton when she allegedly recklessly pointed the firearm in the direction of Prokopienko. The firearm discharged, striking Prokopienko and causing his death.

As a result of the investigation, Walts was arrested and charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a class C felony.

Walts was processed and arraigned in Oneida County CAP Court. She was remanded to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail, $250,000 bond, or $1.5 million partially secured bond.

State Police investigating death in Trenton

On September 17, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m., State Police responded to a residence on Jones Road in the town of Trenton for a reported shots fired complaint.

Upon arrival, Troopers located Michael A. Prokopienko, age 31, of Holland Patent, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. At this time, State Police do not believe there is any threat to the public.
