Two teens arrested following arson and burglary investigation at former butler correctional facility

The New York State Police have arrested two individuals following an investigation into a fire and burglary at the former Butler Correctional Facility in the town of Butler, Wayne County.

On June 3, 2026, at approximately 4:04 p.m., State Police responded to the former Butler Correctional Facility on Westbury Cutoff Road after receiving reports that two individuals had entered the property and started fires inside one of the buildings.

The investigation determined that an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old unlawfully entered a maintenance building on the property. While inside, the pair allegedly started multiple fires using paper and cardboard and spray-painted graffiti within the building. Responding members of the Red Creek Fire Department extinguished several active fires, preventing further damage to the structure.

The 18-year-old was charged with:

Burglary 3rd degree (D felony)

Arson 4th degree (E felony)

Criminal Mischief 4th degree (A misdemeanor)

The 18-year-old was processed at SP Wolcott and arraigned in Wayne County CAP Court.

The 17-year-old was charged with:

Burglary 3rd degree (D felony)

On June 9, 2026, the 17-year-old surrendered himself at SP Lyons and was processed before being arraigned in Wayne County Youth Part Court. He was released on his own recognizance.

This is an ongoing investigation.
