One million and counting on a roll for NY AG

After the NY Attorney General Letitia James was indicted by federal grand jury for felony charges related to mortgage fraud in NY and Virginia, local elected officials started the campaign, Hand of Tish which raised $567,000 within 24 hours from over 24,000 donors on Friday. That number has continued to increase and is expected to be over a cool million dollars.

Most of the donations came from online after emails were mailed out appealing to anyone to cough up dough.

Since this is a federal case and not state or city, the legal defense can exceed $40 million which will drag to at least two years. As of now, the NY Governor has set aside $10 million slush fund for legal defense and did not say if that will be used as of yet. Also, the Democratic Attorneys General Association announced it was setting up a fund that James and other officials could tap but did not disclose how much. The Democratic Attorneys General Association said contributions would be routed through a 527 organization and would be disclosed in an annual filing. That kind of organization can accept unlimited donations from individuals, corporations and labor unions in order to influence policies, appointments or elections.

The most immediate legal threat to James stems from allegations that she made false statements on loan documents related to her Brooklyn brownstone as well as a house in Virginia. James has denied wrongdoing. A court date has been set for October 24 for James. Meanwhile, Democrats in NY are continuing to campaign with the Hands of Tish citywide to raise funds.
