MTA to test new setup without swiping

Starting next week, MTA will test the new MetroCard setup using mobile app instead of swiping for commuters.

The app is Apple Pay for iPhone and a simple tap next to the turnstile will be recorded for commuters using NYC subways and buses. It will be called One Metro New York or OMNY.

Almost 20 stations have the setup primarily around Grand Central and sports arena locations.

This also applies to LIRR which will be all under one app. For those who doesn't have smart phones including tourists, a re-loadable cards will be available and its touch and go. It will be available by May 2019.

By 2023, the swiping of card is officially over.
