Withdrawal can even lead to hallucinations or cause seizures. Alcohol withdrawal could require hospitalization and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the state needs to keep people away from the ERs as much as possible, as resources, space and staffing are already tight. A person experiencing withdrawals would go to the hospital to detox, and medical professionals would give that person medication similar to Valium as a taper over a couple of days until they are safely out of the woods and through the withdrawal.
