The NYC DSNY is on the enforcement prowl and this time it's 'Composting is Mandatory' law starting April 1 which is next week.

All food waste must be separated from regular garbage or face fines per container.

The brown colored container must be used.

Composting food in NYC is now mandatory, and it is picked up every week on your recycling day. The composting service collects leaf and yard waste, food scraps, and food-soiled paper, including products certified or labeled as compostable so follow the labels by reading them.
