Starting Monday February 13 Mayor di Blasio reported any New Yorkers making below 50 000 facing eviction in NYC will have free legal representation

Those making over $50,000 will have free legal counseling. This includes Glen Oaks Village coop, other coops, condos and all types of tenants. di Blasio has set aside $93 million tax payer's fund for this service. Back in 2013, there was only less than 1% free legal representation and as of today, its increased to 27%. di Blasio's goal is to make it 100% after reporting of eviction down to 24% when tenants had free legal representation. Here is an example of how the system works. 1. If tenant pays the rent on time, there is no need to set aside taxpayer's fund for legal representation. 2. Tenants are required to pay rent but often hold the rent when the landlord doesn't do the repairs or provide heat or hot water. Tenants can go to the court for a case. 4. Tenant will be provided with legal representation once they go to the court to file a case if they qualify. 5. Tenant suing a landlord apart from eviction will not have free legal representation. 3. The average eviction process is from 3 to 6 months depending on the judge's decision based on statements heard from both tenant and landlord.
