Rent moratorium proposed to 6 months

While 60% of tenants in NY paid their rent, landlords are still working with the other 40% for due receivables. NYS Senate Mike Gianaris introduced 90 days rent and mortgage cancellation but the bill was not in the state budget package after voting against it. Now three local politicians are introducing a new bill under the Tenant Safe Harbor Act to extend the eviction to 6 months. This is to control the uptick of cases in the housing court when it reopens in June 15. The bill is prepared by Brad Hoylman, Jeffrey Dinowitz and Liz Kruger. In the proposal, landlords can file the case for non-payment but eviction stalled for 6 months or cancel if the tenant opted to move out. The bill is in the early stage.
