Queens man pleaded guilty after self defense act heading to jail

Today, a Queens resident, a 67 years old male pleaded guilty after defending himself from a suspect who was trying to rob him two years ago who was shot dead during the altercation. The original sentence was 25 years if the case continued with trial but pleading guilty resulted in four years according to his lawyer for illegal gun possession. From the police report, the accused suspect approached the man outside his apartment in Kew Gardens on May 31, 2023 around 2am while smoking by displaying a weapon which turned out to be a pen during a robbery attempt. This is when the accused suspect was hit with bullets and died later. The man called 911 and confessed to cops of the incident. Further investigation stated the gun was unlicensed while cops found more guns in the apartment also unlicensed. The man was taken into custody and was released on $50,000 bond.

Although his lawyer stated he should not have been charged with, the Queens DA’s office insisted on charges. The man has never been arrested but the judge stated unlicensed guns where there are too many shootings in the city is a concern.
