Police statement on the Queens assault of Nassau County detectives

The Major Case Bureau reports the arrest of two men that occurred on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 11:53 p.m. in Corona, Queens for multiple Grand Larcenies that occurred throughout Nassau County.

According to Detectives, Burglary Pattern Team Detectives assigned to the Auto Theft Unit were investigating a stolen car ring which led them to Corona, Queens. During this investigation, they observed a stolen 2018 BMW X5. The vehicle stopped at a BP gas station located near the intersection of the Horace Harding Expressway and 99th Street and Detectives attempted to arrest the three male subjects inside the vehicle. One of the subjects, now known as Jorge Alvarez, was operating the vehicle and intentionally struck one of the arresting Detectives before crashing into a nearby police vehicle. All three subjects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Defendants Matthew Garcia, 21, of 10922 54th Avenue, Queens and defendant Rafael Ramirez, 35, of 740 West 187th Street, New York were both found a short time later and arrested. The Detective who was struck suffered multiple injuries including a broken leg and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Defendant Matthew Garcia is charged with two counts of Grand Larceny 2nd degree, four counts of Grand larceny 3rd degree and Resisting Arrest. Defendant Rafael Ramirez is charged with two counts of Grand Larceny 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Resisting Arrest. Defendant Matthew Garcia will be will be arraigned on Thursday, April 23, 2020 in Mineola. Defendant Rafael Ramirez will be arraigned when medically practical. (From NCPD)
