New hiring law starts Saturday in NY

Starting April 18 statewide, anyone seeking a job will not have their credit checked by employers in general. For NYC, it was passed last September. The exceptions are jobs that require security clearance for certain sensitive positions related to national, state or city levels. Also for law enforcement or positions involving financial authority to enter the employer into agreements of more than $10,000 and other jobs related to trade secrets.

While bad credit does affect home loans, buying a car etc, jobs in general no longer require credit check. However, criminal history or substance abuse still remains in effect.

The Governor's office says bad credit needs money to fix and a job is the best solution while employers can see someone's potential with skills or merits during the hiring process. It's a win some lose some ratio but leave to the employer to decide.
