More car fires and then overturned than regular accidents

As of this week, the FDNY reported more car fires in Queens along with overturned incidents than regular accidents in the winter.

As usual, Southern State Parkway, Cross Island Parkway and Belt Parkway are the order in line of overturned vehicle incidents. Northern State Parkway and then the LIE.

Yesterday, College Point Blvd near the LIE reported a car fire in the afternoon. Then another on Frannie Lew in Hollis Hills.

Lastly, the FDNY says there are more manhole fires than vehicle accidents.

From a Google search, this is the statement on car fires in the winter.

Winter car fires are often caused by electrical issues (stressed batteries, frayed block heater cords), fuel/fluid leaks near hot parts, and snow/ice buildup electrical issues (stressed batteries, frayed block heater cords), fuel/fluid leaks near hot parts, and snow/ice buildup blocking exhaust, trapping heat; these conditions are worsened by cold weather stressing components or prolonged idling while stuck, igniting plastics and fluids. Poor maintenance, aftermarket accessories, and even rodents chewing wires add to the risk.
