Mayor di Blasio to launch therapeutic housing units instead of jails for inmates

The mayor's office reported its in the planning stage to launch therapeutic housing units for inmates instead of jails for mental health, drugs and other medical related issues. The locations of hospitals to house inmates has not been announced but it will be in the vicinity of city hospitals in four boroughs except Staten Island. This will be operated under Correctional Health Services and Dept of Correction. Reported around 15 to 16% which is in the range of 1,000 to 1,100 inmates are diagnosed with health related issues. One great advantage will be elimination of travel time for inmates between jails and hospitals. Currently, the city has two public hospitals that house inmates requiring constant care. They are Bellevue and Elmhurst Hospitals. The man who was shot in Bayside is still in the hospital and has not been arraigned.
