Long Beach man sentenced to 22 years in prison for attacking former coworker with Ax

Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Long Beach man was sentenced today to 22 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 60-year-old former coworker in 2025, striking him several times in the head and face with an ax and causing life-threatening injuries.

Anthony Calvo, 35, pleaded guilty on March 20, 2026, before Judge Robert Bogle to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony).

The defendant was sentenced today to 22 years in prison.

“Anthony Calvo’s vicious attack last year set Long Beach residents on edge, fearing that an assailant with an ax was threatening their streets. Calvo’s attack, however, was targeted. Spurred by a workplace dispute that this defendant decided to end with brutal violence,” said DA Donnelly. “Calvo will spend the next two decades in prison, but his ruthless actions condemned an innocent man to round-the-clock medical care and a very long road to recovery. We wish the victim and his family well, and hope that today’s sentence provides them with the justice they deserve.”

DA Donnelly said that, on February 13, 2025, at approximately 5:50 a.m., the victim was walking home from his overnight shift as a taxi dispatcher for Long Beach Taxi.

As the victim walked down Arizona Avenue toward his home, the defendant ran up to him from behind and attacked him with an ax, striking him at least three times, in his face, head, and arm.

The defendant was previously employed at Long Beach Taxi as a driver and stopped working there in 2022.

After the attack, the victim dragged himself to the rear yard of his home and banged on the door for help. A family member called 911 and members of the Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene.

The victim was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.

He suffered serious injuries to his head and jaw, requiring multiple surgeries.

Surveillance video obtained through the investigation shows the defendant fleeing the scene on a white electronic bicycle and wearing dark clothing.

A search warrant was executed at the defendant’s apartment on February 19, 2025, during which a white electronic bicycle and full-face mask were discovered.
