Brooklyn man charged with murder after knife attack in Kew Garden Hills

Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan announced today that a 30-year-old Brooklyn resident has been charged with attempted murder, assault and other crimes for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend?s 6-year-old child in the neck and then stabbing the woman in the throat, when she tried to intervene. The double stabbing occurred early in the morning on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, in the Kew Garden Hills neighborhood of Queens.

Acting District AttorneyRyan said, ?The defendant in this case is accused of attacking an innocent child with a knife and then turning the blade on the girl?s mother when she tried to stop him. This was a heinous act of violence that put both victims at grave risk. The defendant is in custody and now faces spending decades in prison as punishment for his alleged criminal actions.?

The District Attorney?s Office identified the defendant as Steven Bagu, 30, of Cozine Avenue in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. The defendant was just arraigned before Queens Criminal Court Judge Jeffrey Gershuny on a complaint charging him with second-degree attempted murder, firstand second-degree assault, first-degree attempted assault,first-degree unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Judge Gershuny remanded the defendant and ordered him to return to court on February 13, 2020. If convicted, Bagu faces up to 25 years in prison.

Acting District Attorney Ryan said that, according to the charges, between 2 and 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 28, 2019, the defendant?s girlfriend awoke to the sound of her daughter screaming. The woman ran into the living room and allegedly saw Bagu standing over her 6-year-old daughter with a knife in his right hand. The little girl had been stabbed in the neck and was bleeding.

Continuing, said Acting DA Ryan, according to the complaint, the mother of the girl attempted to go to her daughter, but the defendant blocked her. Then the woman turned to go toward the door to get help. That?s when the defendant allegedly jumped in front of her and grabbed her. The woman repeatedly tried to escape until Bagu allegedly stabbed her in the throat with the knife. For two hours, the defendant is alleged to have held both the woman and her daughter.

According to the charges, the mother was able to escape the apartment when the defendant fell asleep. The woman went to a neighbor?s apartment for help and called 911. Bagu was apprehended at the scene. Both victims were taken to nearby hospitals. The little girl received stitches to close a puncture wound to her neck. The girl?s mother had to undergo surgery after having her trachea was punctured by the blade of the knife. (From Queens DA's Office)
