25 year old man charged with murder in deadly subway stabbing in Queens

According to police, a 25-year-old guy has been accused of murder in the stabbing death of another passenger on a Queens J train.

Thursday morning, Jyrell Thomas was transported to Jamaica Hospital for a psychiatric examination. Police characterized him as emotionally disturbed.

He was later detained for criminal possession of a weapon and murder.

Thomas was reportedly pacing back and forth within the train vehicle and seemed restless before approaching Mesias Lojano, 59, shortly after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, police said. Police say that before Thomas attacked him with a kitchen knife, Lojano attempted to leave.

Bismarck Villareyna recorded the incident and took video on the train.

"I heard, oh somebody is being attacked, somebody being attacked. So I pulled out my phone, started walking, as you see in the video," Villareyna said.

The violence ultimately reached a J train platform, where onlookers pursued Thomas.

Hold the elderly man who was following me! Maintain a tight hold on him! Hold him down! He started running then. Villareyna said, "And then I began following after him.

Villareyna admitted that he thought about stepping in physically, but he was afraid he might also get stabbed.

"I wanted to kick him, but I say, you know, if I kick him and I miss or he stabbed me then. So I was getting my position. I tried to record to get, you know, evidence."

Villareyna kept after Thomas and brought officers to him. Where he had to be carried and lifted, Thomas climbed atop a roof.

"Then he just stopped there and he sat down and he was saying, 'oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do it.' But in some of my videos, I was, I was upset," Villareyna said.

Thomas has one earlier arrest from a robbery in which he stole $23 worth of goods from a Bronx Target in the beginning of last month. He was accused of misdemeanor robbery, impeding governmental management, and felony possession of stolen property.
